liner notes: Modern classics and contemporary jazz
Nadelöhr is new music from Zurich. Nadelöhr is also a play on words: the English "Eye of the Needle" is the "Ear of the Needle" in German. But both apply to this quartet, a formation consisting of a violine, a saxophone, double-bass and drums/vibraphone that will open your eyes and ears to exceptional sounds. Modern classics and contemporary jazz blend in a mixture from which reminiscences of Bartók, Schönberg, Coleman and Coltrane emerge. However, Nadelöhr’s music is airy and sensual, at times tender, at times severe – a glimpse of spring in a wintery soundscape!
"Sympathetic, fresh and played with a loving touch, consciously and unconsciously hopscotching the seam that holds the known and unknown together, joyfully bounding and turning cartwheels while keeping an eye on honey, nectar and soothing balm."
