Between science and music
In his main profession, he is a scientist in the pharmaceutical industry - but music is his elixir and constant companion in all phases of life. As a youngster, he gave concerts with Ack van Rooyen, Gunter Hampel, Wolfgang Schlüter or Charlie Mariano as a pianist in the Lower Saxony State Youth Jazz Orchestra and winner of the national competition 'Jugend Jazzt'. And although he had often flirted with taking up a music degree during this time, he nevertheless made the decision to pursue an academic career. His studies were followed by a doctorate and years of professional travel to Sweden, England and Austria - everywhere he quickly succeeded in making contacts through music. Finally, seven years ago, he returned to Germany to the culturally rich capital Berlin, where Andreas quickly found access to the lively jazz scene. Now also arose the desire to work more on his own sound and to write his own pieces. "In my profession I am looking for new approaches to cure diseases, in music I want to find new sounds, rhythms and forms. Even if they seem to be completely different activities, I increasingly notice how much they are connected and mutually stimulate each other. Professionally, I am used to working very goal-oriented with deadlines. That also helps me as a musician. The way I think about complex scientific problems and look for solutions is not so different from composing pieces, for example, where you dive deep into sound worlds, listen to yourself and experiment so that harmonies, rhythms and melodies fit together. I am firmly convinced that jazz music in particular has a lot to say to the modern working world. In a complex world, not everything can be planned and you have to learn to deal with a lot of uncertainty and often improvise. There are actually no mistakes in jazz music; first and foremost, it's simply sounds that you react to. It inspires me how to deal with mistakes at work".
In Pandemic, a new programme of 12 very catchy but still multi-layered pieces was created, which Andreas arranged together with guitarist and producer Igor Osypov for the new band with Dima Bondarev, Igor Spallati and Fabian Rösch. "It was important to me to continue searching for my own voice with this CD and not simply copy role models. My pieces often have unusual forms and idiosyncratic harmonies. Even though I would like to keep tweaking them, I am now extremely satisfied with the result. We had a very nice, friendly time in the studio. I think you can hear that in the music! For the next time, I wish that I can reconcile music and job well and find a way of life that allows me to do both on a good level."

Zwischen Wissenschaft und Musik
Im Hauptberuf ist er Wissenschaftler in der pharmazeutischen Industrie - doch Musik ist sein Elixier und stetiger Begleiter in allen Lebensphasen. Als Jugendlicher gab er als Pianist des Landesjugendjazzorchesters Niedersachsen und Preisträger des Bundeswettbewerbs ‘Jugend Jazzt’ Konzerte mit Ack van Rooyen, Gunter Hampel, Wolfgang Schlüter oder Charlie Mariano. Und obwohl er in dieser Zeit oft mit der Aufnahme eines Musikstudiums geliebäugelt hatte, traf er dennoch die Entscheidung zu einer wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn. Auf das Studium folgten Doktorarbeit und berufliche Wanderjahre nach Schweden, England und Österreich - überall gelang es durch die Musik schnell Kontakte zu knüpfen. Schließlich ging es vor 7 Jahren wieder zurück nach Deutschland in die kulturreiche Hauptstadt Berlin, wo Andreas rasch Zugang zur lebhaften Jazzszene fand. Nun entstand auch der Wunsch, verstärkt am eigenen Sound zu arbeiten und eigene Stücke zu schreiben. “In meinem Beruf suche ich nach neuen Ansätzen Krankheiten zu heilen, in der Musik möchte neue Klänge, Rhythmen und Formen finden. Auch wenn es vordergründig völlig unterschiedliche Tätigkeiten sind, merke ich zunehmends, wie sehr sie doch zusammenhängen und sich gegenseitig befruchten. Beruflich bin ich es gewohnt mit terminlichen Vorgaben sehr zielorientiert zu arbeiten. Das hilft mir auch als Musiker. Auch die Art wie ich über abstrakte wissenschaftliche Probleme nachdenke und nach Lösungen suche, ist eigentlich nicht so anders wie z.B. Stücke zu komponieren, wo man in klangliche Welten tief eintaucht, in sich hinein hört und experimentiert, damit sich Harmonien, Rhythmen und Melodien zueinander fügen. Ich bin ich fest davon überzeugt, dass gerade Jazzmusik der modernen Arbeitswelt viel zu sagen hat. In einer komplexen Welt ist nicht mehr alles planbar und man muss lernen, mit viel Unsicherheit umzugehen und oft zu improvisieren. Fehler gibt es in der Jazzmusik eigentlich nicht, sondern es sind zuallererst einfach mal Klänge, auf die man reagiert. Mich inspiriert das, wie ich auf der Arbeit mit Fehlern umgehen kann”.
In der Pandemie entstand ein neues Programm aus 12 sehr eingängigen aber dennoch vielschichtigen Stücken, die Andreas gemeinsam mit dem Gitarristen und Produzenten Igor Osypov für die neue Band mit Dima Bondarev, Igor Spallati und Fabian Rösch arrangierte. “Mir war es wichtig, mit dieser CD weiter nach meiner eigenen Stimme zu suchen und nicht einfach nur Vorbilder zu kopieren. Meine Stücke haben oft ungewöhnliche Formen und eigenwillige Harmonien. Auch wenn ich am liebsten immer weiter an ihnen feilen würde, bin ich mit dem Resultat nun äußerst zufrieden. Wir hatten eine sehr schöne, freundschaftliche Zeit im Studio. Ich finde, dass man das der Musik anhört! Für die nächste Zeit wünsche ich mir, dass ich Musik und Beruf gut unter einen Hut bringen kann und eine Lebensweise finde, die mir beides auf gutem Niveau ermöglicht.”

Entre science et musique
Son métier principal est scientifique dans l'industrie pharmaceutique - mais la musique est son élixir et l'accompagne constamment dans toutes les phases de sa vie. Adolescent, il a donné des concerts avec Ack van Rooyen, Gunter Hampel, Wolfgang Schlüter ou Charlie Mariano en tant que pianiste de l'orchestre de jazz des jeunes du Land de Basse-Saxe et lauréat du concours fédéral 'Jugend Jazzt'. Et bien qu'à cette époque, il ait souvent caressé l'idée d'entamer des études de musique, il a néanmoins pris la décision de se lancer dans une carrière scientifique. Les études ont été suivies d'une thèse de doctorat et d'années de pérégrinations professionnelles en Suède, en Angleterre et en Autriche - partout, la musique lui a permis de nouer rapidement des contacts. Finalement, il y a sept ans, il est retourné en Allemagne, à Berlin, la capitale culturelle, où Andreas a rapidement trouvé un accès à la scène jazz très animée. C'est alors qu'est né le désir de travailler davantage sur son propre son et d'écrire ses propres morceaux. "Dans ma profession, je cherche de nouvelles approches pour soigner les maladies, dans la musique, je veux trouver de nouveaux sons, rythmes et formes. Même si, à première vue, il s'agit d'activités totalement différentes, je remarque de plus en plus à quel point elles sont liées et se nourrissent mutuellement. Sur le plan professionnel, j'ai l'habitude de travailler de manière très ciblée en respectant des délais. Cela m'aide aussi en tant que musicien. De même, ma manière de réfléchir à des problèmes scientifiques complexes et de chercher des solutions n'est pas si différente de celle de composer des morceaux, par exemple, où l'on plonge dans des univers sonores, où l'on s'écoute et où l'on expérimente pour que les harmonies, les rythmes et les mélodies se rejoignent. Je suis intimement convaincu que la musique de jazz a beaucoup à dire au monde du travail moderne. Dans un monde complexe, tout ne peut plus être planifié et il faut apprendre à gérer l'incertitude et à improviser souvent. Il n'y a pas vraiment d'erreurs dans la musique de jazz, ce sont avant tout des sons auxquels on réagit. Je m'inspire de la manière dont je peux gérer les erreurs dans mon travail".
La pandémie a donné naissance à un nouveau programme de 12 morceaux très accrocheurs mais néanmoins complexes, qu'Andreas a arrangés en collaboration avec le guitariste et producteur Igor Osypov pour le nouveau groupe composé de Dima Bondarev, Igor Spallati et Fabian Rösch. "Il était important pour moi de continuer à chercher ma propre voix avec ce CD et de ne pas simplement copier des modèles. Mes morceaux ont souvent des formes inhabituelles et des harmonies originales. Même si j'aimerais continuer à les peaufiner, je suis extrêmement satisfait du résultat. Nous avons passé un moment très agréable et amical en studio. Je pense que cela se ressent dans la musique ! Pour le futur proche, je souhaite pouvoir concilier musique et travail et trouver un mode de vie qui me permette de faire les deux à un bon niveau".
