In addition to founding BLUME, he established the band “Subtone” in 2005, with which he has toured across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa. From 2006 to 2021, he was a core member of the “Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra”, collaborating with artists like Hermeto Pascoal. He has also performed with Norma Winstone, Allan Praskin, Johannes Enders, and Christopher Dell.
Recent appearances include Jazzfest Berlin, Jazz Baltica, Bohemia Jazz Fest, Jazzfest Burghausen, Enjoy Jazz Mannheim, and the Berlin Philharmonie.

As a soloist and sideman, he has performed with Lalo Schifrin, Archie Shepp, Phil Woods, John Abercrombie, Fred Hersch, Gunther Schuller, Tania Maria, Jim McNeely, Jeff "Tain" Watts, James Genus, George Garzone, Pee Wee Ellis, Charles Tolliver, and the HR and WDR Big Bands.

Magnus Schriefl ist Jazz-Trompeter und Komponist. Mit Blumen Berlin Bettina erscheint im September 2025 bereits sein siebtes Album unter eigenem Namen. Neben BLUME gründete er 2005 die Band SUBTONE, mit der er Konzerte in Europa, Asien, Nord- und Südamerika sowie Afrika spielte. Von 2006 bis 2021 war er festes Mitglied im Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, wo er u. a. mit Hermeto Pascoal arbeitete. Darüber hinaus spielte er mit Musiker*innen wie Norma Winstone, Allan Praskin, Johannes Enders und Christopher Dell.
Auftritte führten ihn u. a. zum Jazzfest Berlin, Jazz Baltica, Bohemia Jazz Fest, Jazzfest Burghausen, Enjoy Jazz Mannheim und in die Philharmonie Berlin.
2011 gewann er den 1. Preis beim National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax/Virginia sowie den 2. Preis beim Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition in Springfield/Missouri.

Matthias Pichler, geboren 1981, studierte klassischen Kontrabass am Konservatorium Innsbruck und Jazz-Bass an der Anton-Bruckner-Privatuniversität Linz. 2004 erhielt er im Rahmen des Hans- Koller-Preises ein New-York-Stipendium, das ihn zu Studien bei John Patitucci, Larry Grenadier und Marc Johnson führte. Zwei Jahre später wurde er mit dem Hans-Koller-Preis in der Kategorie „Sideman of the Year“ ausgezeichnet.

Als fester Teil der deutschen Jazzszene spielte er mit Musiker*innen wie Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew D'Angelo, Greg Cohen, Pablo Held, Logan Richardson, Hayden Chisholm, Wanja Slavin, Johannes Enders und vielen weiteren.

With “Blumen Berlin Bettina”, trumpeter Magnus Schriefl releases his second album with his band BLUME, following their 2015 debut. This new work, comprising ten original compositions, offers an intimate glimpse into Schriefl’s personal musical microcosm.
Rooted in the socio-musical environment of the Berlin jazz scene, shaped by stays in Madagascar and Malawi, and deeply influenced by African-American jazz and the spirit and hipness of musicians like Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Duke Ellington, the pieces present a unique musical amalgamation of diverse ideas, concepts, and forms—sometimes humorous, sometimes highly complex.
Despite intricate harmonies and refined compositions, the album maintains a strong focus on melody and lyricism, often giving the music a poetic quality.
Take the title track “Blumen Berlin Bettina”, for example: its calm and melancholic character is undoubtedly influenced by the slowed-down atmosphere of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as by nostalgic reflections on great love and many shared years—the piece was a birthday gift, written during the first summer of the pandemic.
Tracks like “Johnny Whistleblower” or “Hiassl im Himmel” create connections between people, concepts, and musical traditions. With great imagination and craftsmanship, they reveal the vast potential of musical curiosity, openness, and creative freedom.
Some tracks received their titles only after the fact, inspired by how they were perceived. “Meret’s Magic Moves” is dedicated to a family concert, where children danced wildly despite the complexity of the music. “Band Love Aggression” reflects on the tensions and contradictions that can arise through the unique dynamics of musical collaboration.
“Coffee And Red Wine” evokes narrative and emotional links to everyday life in Berlin—from late-night red wine to early-morning coffee.

Magnus Schriefl hat als gebürtiger Allgäuer in vielen großen Jazz-Metropolen (New York, Paris, Amsterdam) gewirkt und lebt inzwischen in Berlin.
Mit Ben Kraef am Saxophon, Sebastian Böhlen an der Gitarre, Matthias Pichler am Kontrabass und Fabian Rösch am Schlagzeug versammelt Magnus Schriefl exzellente Jazzmusiker der international renommierten Berliner Szene.
Gespeist aus dem sozio-musikalischen Umfeld der Berliner Jazz-Szene, Aufenthalten in Madagaskar und Malawi, einem starken Bezug zu afroamerikanischem Jazz und dem Spirit und der Hipness von Musikern wie Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker oder Duke Ellington bieten die Stücke eine – teils humorvolle, teils hochkomplexe – musikalische Amalgamierung unterschiedlichster Ideen, Konzepte und Formen. Zentral bleibt dabei, trotz komplexer Harmonien und ausgefeilter Kompositionen, der Fokus auf Melodien und Sanglichkeit – die Stücke haben teilweise fast poetischen Charakter.
Wie zum Beispiel im Titelstück „Blumen Berlin Bettina“: die ruhige und melancholische Grundstimmung hat mit dem gedämpften aber auch entschleunigten Hintergrund der Pandemiezeit sicher genauso viel zu tun wie die nostalgische Reflektion auf die große Liebe und vielen gemeinsamen Jahren – das Stück war ein Geburtstagsgeschenk, geschrieben während des ersten Corona-Sommers.
Stücke wie „Johnny Whistleblower“ oder „Hiassl im Himmel“ stellen Querverbindungen zwischen verschiedenen Personen, Konzepten und Musiktraditionen her: Mit viel Fantasie und großem handwerklichen Können wird gezeigt, welches Potential in musikalischer Neugierde, Offenheit und Freigeist liegt.
