29 years old swiss born pianist and composer Laurent Nicoud lives at the junction of jazz, imrpovisation, composition and classical music. He’s expressing himself into different musical contexts from solo piano jazz, duo, jazz trio, symphony orchestra as a soloist and chamber music.
His firt solo recording (recorded in 2018 in Brooklyn NY) released on QFTF in January 2020 shows his skills as a composer and improviser. He started piano at age 6. His first teacher was a private one. He already played by ears and pieces for his lessons. In 2001 he entered the conservatory of Neuchâtel his hometown. He studied there with bulgarian teacher Veneziela Naydenova. In 2003 at age of 12, he made his first apperance as a soloist playing a concerto-rondo of Mozart with camerata Stravaganza in Neuchâtel as part of a concert series organised by conservatory. The next year, he played his first solo recital in the same serie with works by Bach, Chopin, Schumann and Debussy. In 2005 he won the 1st prize in swiss young music competition in la Chaux-de Fonds and Lugano.
In 2007, he started his professional studies at Geneva University of music with teacher Sylviane Deferne while studying at the high school in his hometown. He studied there five years for Bachelor and Master and also did the whole program in chamber music, harmony, counterpoint musical history. He played for the first time with a symphony orchestra in 2010 with the orchestra of geneva university of music playing Frank Martin’s Symphonie concertante in Geneva (studio Ansermet), Neuchâtel and Winterthur Musikkollegium. In 2012 he played Gershwin piano concerto in F with Geneva symphonic orchestra at the Victoria Hall. In 2013 and 2014 he played Beethoven’s piano concerto no 3 and 4 with the neue zürcher orchester under the direction of Martin Studer.
He started playing in jazz group with friends from high school in 2007. Then in 2010 he formed his frist trio with bass and drum with his friends too. They performed in various situations for the school and different occasions in concert hall and small places playing standards and their own music. Later he started compose deeply for trio his own music. He taught 4 years (starting at 20 years old) piano and improvisation at Geneva Conservatory of music. In 2016 he took part in a radio show for swiss radio playing extracts dfrom the well tempered clavier of Bach.
In 2017 and 2018 he lived in New York City where he studied deeply jazz and composition with Jacob Sacks and Shai Maestro. There he formed also a new trio with Noah Garabedian on bass (played with Ravi Coltrane) and Alex Feldman on drums. They played at Bluebird Brooklyn. He started to play in duo with saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis. They recorded their first album together in Janury 2020 in between a concert tours in duo in Germany and Switzerland.
In June 2018 in Brooklyn he recorded his first solo piano album called Outline with twelve originals jazz compositions that he made in New York City. This record was released in January 2020 on the german jazz label QFTF. It was directly acclaimed by the international critics. In addition to many international reviews (UK Vibe, All About Jazz, Jazz Journal, Jazz Podium), his album was diffused on different radio stations in Europe in 2020 such as RTB Bruxelles, HR2 Frankfurt, Radio zwei Bremen or Radio Dreyckland in jazz programms including music by legendary musicians such as Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Dave Holland or Zakir Hussain.
A third album contained 16 new originals compositions (also in solo) will be release this winter 2021. In 2018 and 2019 he was invited to play and teach for the summer academy in Mürren (swiss alps) where he played jazz solo sets as well as classical chamber music. His first piece (as a classical composer) for violin and piano entitled “into the old city” (a three movement sonata) was created during this festival in Mürren and Zürich with professional students from St Petersburg’s state Conservatory . He composed also a trio for cello violin and piano to be created soon in Russia in St Petersburg and Switzerland.
He performed in Switzerland, Austria, Ukraine, Canada, France and USA in various jazz festivals and clubs such as Odessa Jazz Fest, St Petersburg Jazz Fest and Porgy and Bess jazz Club.

2018 und 2019 wurde er eingeladen, an der Sommerakademie in Mürren Berner Oberland (Schweizer Alpen) zu spielen und zu unterrichten, wo er Jazz-Solo-Sets sowie klassische Kammermusik spielte. Sein erstes Werk (als klassischer Komponist) für Violine und Klavier mit dem Titel «into the old city» (eine dreistimmige Sonate) entstand während des Festivals in Mürren und Zürich mit professionellen Studenten des Staatlichen Konservatoriums St. Petersburg. Im Jahr darauf spielte er sein erstes Solo-Rezital mit Werken von Bach, Chopin, Schumann und Debussy. 2005 gewann er den 1. Preis beim Schweizer Wettbewerb für junge Musik in La Chaux-de Fonds und Lugano in der Schweiz.
2007 begann er sein Berufsstudium an der Genfer Musikuniversität bei der Lehrerin Sylviane Deferne, während er am Gymnasium seiner Heimatstadt studierte. Dort studierte er fünf Jahre für Bachelor und Master und absolvierte auch das gesamte Programm in Kammermusik, Harmonie, Kontrapunkt Musikgeschichte. 2010 spielte er erstmals mit einem Sinfonieorchester mit dem Orchester der Genfer Musikhochschule mit Frank Martins Symphonie concertante in Genf (Studio Ansermet), Neuenburg und dem Winterthurer Musikkollegium. 2012 spielte er Gershwin Klavierkonzert in F mit dem Genfer Symphonischen Orchester in der Victoria Hall. 2013 und 2014 spielte er Beethovens Klavierkonzert Nr. 3 und 4 mit dem neuen zürcher Orchester unter der Leitung von Martin Studer.
2007 begann er mit Freunden aus der Highschool in einer Jazzgruppe zu spielen. 2010 gründete er dann mit seinen Freunden sein erstes Trio mit Bass und Schlagzeug. Sie traten in verschiedenen Situationen für die Schule und zu verschiedenen Anlässen in Konzertsälen und kleinen Räumen auf und spielten Standards und ihre eigene Musik. Später begann er, für Trio seine eigene Musik zu komponieren. Er unterrichtete 4 Jahre (ab 20 Jahren) Klavier und Improvisation am Genfer Konservatorium. 2016 nahm er an einer Radioshow für Schweizer Radiospiele teil, die Auszüge aus dem wohltemperierten Bach-Klavier spielen.
2017 und 2018 lebte er in New York City, wo er intensiv Jazz und Komposition bei Jacob Sacks und Shai Maestro studierte. Dort gründete er auch ein neues Trio mit Noah Garabedian am Bass (gespielt mit Ravi Coltrane) und Alex Feldman am Schlagzeug. Sie spielten im Bluebird Brooklyn. Er begann im Duo mit dem Saxophonisten Caleb Wheeler Curtis zu spielen. Ihr erstes gemeinsames Album
nahmen sie im Januar 2020 zwischen Konzertreisen im Duo in Deutschland und der Schweiz auf.
Im Juni 2018 nahm er in Brooklyn sein erstes Solo-Klavieralbum «Outline» mit zwölf Original- Jazzkompositionen auf, die er in New York City komponierte. Diese Platte erschien im Januar 2020 auf dem deutschen Jazzlabel QFTF. Es wurde von der internationalen Kritik direkt begrüsst. Neben vielen internationalen Kritiken (UK Vibe, All About Jazz, Jazz Journal, Jazz Podium) wurde sein Album 2020 in verschiedenen europäischen Radiosendern wie RTB Bruxelles, HR2 Frankfurt, Radio zwei Bremen oder Radio Dreyckland in Jazzprogrammen mit Musik von legendären Musikern wie Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Dave Holland oder Zakir Hussain ausgestrahlt.
Ein drittes Album mit 16 neuen Eigenkompositionen (auch solo) erscheint im Winter 2021.
2018 und 2019 wurde er eingeladen, an der Sommerakademie in Mürren Berner Oberland (Schweizer Alpen) zu spielen und zu unterrichten, wo er Jazz-Solo-Sets sowie klassische Kammermusik spielte. Sein erstes Werk (als klassischer Komponist) für Violine und Klavier mit dem Titel «into the old city» (eine dreistimmige Sonate) entstand während des Festivals in Mürren und Zürich mit professionellen Studenten des Staatlichen Konservatoriums St. Petersburg. Er komponierte auch ein Trio für Violine und Klavier, das bald in Russland in St. Petersburg und der Schweiz entstehen sollte.
Er trat in der Schweiz, Österreich, der Ukraine, Kanada, Frankreich und den USA bei diversen Jazzfestivals und Clubs wie Odessa Jazz Fest, St Petersburg Jazz Fest und Porgy and Bess Jazz Club auf.

Der in Brooklyn, NY, ansässige Saxophonist Caleb Wheeler Curtis «lebt an der Schnittstelle von rigoroser Vorbereitung und Entdeckungsfreude. » (Jazz spricht) Er ist auf zwei GRAMMY Nominated Alben von Orrin Evans und der Captain Black Big Band zu sehen. Sein Spiel und seine Kompositionen sind geprägt von einer ständigen Suche, manchmal introspektiv, frech und melodisch. Für mich ist das das ultimative für einen Hornisten. «Seine Album Brothers (produziert von Orrin Evans und mit Josh Lawrence, Eric Revis, Luques Curtis, Mark Whitfield Jr. und Seamus Blake) erschien 2018 bei Imani Records. All About Jazz sagte, die Musik sei «scharf, anregend und manchmal wunderbar neu. » Neighborhood (Ropeadope Records), das 2015 erschienene Debütalbum des in Brooklyn ansässigen Quartetts Walking Distance, für das Caleb Altsaxophon komponiert und spielt, wurde von der Kritik gefeiert. Ihr neues Album Freebird feat. Jason Moran (Sunnyside Records) wurde von der New York Times, dem DownBeat Magazine, Bandcamp (best of September 2018), JazzTimes und anderen viel gelobt. Die New York Times schrieb, dass «[Walking Distance] in das neue Zeug reisst, das es geschaffen hat, klingt alterslos», dass die Musik «völlig frisch» sei und wählte sie zu einer der 20 besten Jazz-Aufnahmen des Jahres 2018.
Caleb hat einen Bachelor of Music (Jazz Studies) von der Michigan State University und einen Master of Music (Jazz Performance) von der William Paterson University. Caleb reist regelmässig zu internationalen Auftritten und tritt regelmässig in den Clubs Blue Note, Jazz Standard, Smalls, Smoke, Zinc Bar, Dizzy’s und anderen NYC Clubs auf. Calebs individualistische Herangehensweise an Improvisation und Klang hat dazu geführt, dass er als «einer der interessantesten Altists seit langem» gefeiert wurde. « (Jazzwise)

Substrate is the result of the meeting and musical collaboration between US Brookyln based alto saxophonist Caleb Curtis and swiss born pianist Laurent Nicoud. They met for the first time in New york back in 2018 and started to play together. Improvisations and original creations are in center of their musical thinking. It's a set of 5 compositions from Nicoud, 5 from Curtis and two improvisations of both players. Recorded in between a concert tour in Germany and Switzerland in January 2020, Substrate shows all of this. Recorded in a single session in one afternoon, the opening and closing track are full improvised while the rest of the album is a diverse set of music of both composers. In addition to two traditions (american and european) conversing together the music bring you to different places on each track!
Substrat ist das Ergebnis des Treffens und der musikalischen Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem US-amerikanischen Brookyln-Altsaxophonisten Caleb Curtis und dem Schweizer Pianisten Laurent Nicoud. Sie trafen sich zum ersten Mal 2018 in New York und begannen, zusammen zu spielen. Improvisationen und originelle Kreationen stehen im Mittelpunkt ihres musikalischen Denkens. Allgemeie sind fünf Kompositionen von Nicoud, fünf von Curtis and zwei Improvisationen von beide.
