Charlotte Lang (*1996), born in Basel, is a Swiss-Dutch alto and baritone saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser. She is active in the Swiss and European jazz scene both as a soloist and within large ensembles.
She completed her Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degree in Music Education at JAZZCAMPUS, the University of Music Basel, studying under teachers including Domenic Landolf, Dani Blanc, and Günter Wehinger.
In 2023, she graduated with a Master’s in Performance, Global Jazz from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, under the artistic direction of Danilo Pérez. There, she worked with renowned musicians such as John Patitucci, George Garzone, Godwin Louis, and Frank Tiberi. She was also part of the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice led by Terri Lyne Carrington.
Charlotte is a member of both the Swiss Jazz Orchestra and the Basel Jazz Orchestra and was a member of the Bundesjazzorchester (BuJazzO) from 2020 to 2022 and. Additionally, she has played with internationally acclaimed big bands including the UMO Jazz Orchestra (Helsinki), the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, and the SWR Big Band.
Alongside her work as a sidewoman - collaborating with artists such as MISS C-LINE, Belinda Bones, deb., and Klapparat - she has led her own band, the Charlotte Lang Group (CLG).
The quintet performs her original compositions rooted in modern jazz, offering space for improvisational freedom. Her debut album The Journey was released on October 25, 2024, by Unit Records in the newly established Alpha Edition.
In 2023, she was selected as one of five musicians for the US-based Sisters in Jazz program, and in 2020, she was a winner of the Swiss SOFIA Project (Support of Female Improvising Artists), led by Nicole Johänntgen.
Since 2025, Charlotte teaches saxophone, flute, clarinet, and workshop at the JAZZCAMPS Basel in the music school jazz department.

4 centimeters - that's the length of the human ear canal. Not a long distance, but a lot can happen in these 4 centimeters. When sounds travel through the ear canal, they can delight, shake, make happy or sad, even change lives.
So a journey doesn't necessarily have to be far to leave big traces and inspirations. When Charlotte Lang's melodies and grooves begin their journey through the ear canal, you immediately sense that something is at stake here, that a storyteller is at work who has something to say.
Stories are composed into these sounds, big and small, concrete and abstract. One thing is clear: Charlotte Lang's debut album “The Journey” is outstanding, because it is rare to hear the personality behind the music so strongly.
For Charlotte Lang, born in 1996 with Swiss and Dutch roots, it was love at first sight: At the age of eight, she attended an instrument demonstration and there it was, this beautiful, golden, curved saxophone, and the foundation stone for her future was laid. Today, the alto and baritone saxophonist is a sought-after musician throughout Europe. However, a stay in the USA, at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, was particularly formative for her. She was able to learn from jazz legends such as Terri Lyne Carrington, Danilo Pérez and George Garzone and develop as an independent artist.
Some of the compositions that can now be heard on “The Journey” were written in Boston, where the music was also recorded.
Two different rhythm sections accompany Lang on the tracks, a groove-oriented one with electric guitar and electric bass, and an acoustic one with piano and double bass. This successfully expands the album's sound spectrum and Charlotte Lang can also demonstrate her versatility as a soloist on alto and baritone saxophone. But the sound cosmos of “The Journey” goes even further: the band leader spices up her compositions time and again with bass clarinet and flute tones, sometimes delicate, sometimes present. Three guests can be heard on the album: Singer Farayi Malek, trombonist Lukas Reinert and alto saxophonist Katie Webster. Lang develops a wonderful dialog with Webster in the piece “Common Ground”. The two saxophone voices sometimes seem to merge on their way through the ear canal.
The harmonies of “Silver Charm” spread out like a silvery shimmer of mist, a mist that could rise over the Rhine in Basel, but also over the Charles River in Boston. The piece “Wholehearted” at the end of the album exemplifies every note the saxophonist plays: unconditional passion and determination.

Das Klangspektrum des Albums wird dadurch auf gelungene Art erweitert und Charlotte Lang kann auch als Solistin an Alt- und Baritonsaxophon ihre Vielseitigkeit beweisen. Der Soundkosmos von „The Journey“ geht aber noch weiter: Mit Bassklarinetten- und Querflöten-Tönen würzt die Bandleaderin ihre Kompositionen immer wieder, mal zart, mal präsent. Drei Gäste sind auf dem Album zu hören: Sängerin Farayi Malek, Posaunist Lukas Reinert und Altsaxophonistin Katie Webster. Einen herrlichen Dialog entspinnt Lang mit Webster im Stück „Common Ground“.
