DUDU PENZ
Born in Porto Alegre (Brazil), Dudu Penz began playing guitar at the age of 9. At 14, he switched to bass guitar and quickly made a name for himself through recordings and performances with a wide range of groups in southern Brazil. In 1986, Dudu Penz moved to Switzerland, where he continued his career performing with numerous bands and artists at countless festivals, jazz clubs, and theaters around the world, including:

Geboren in Porto Alegre (Brasilien). Fing im Alter von 9 Jahren an, Gitarre zu spielen. “Tamborim” is a sonic portrait of Dudu Penz’s artistic journey – a dialogue between musical roots and creative reinvention. The album features 13 original compositions, written between 1990 and 2022, six of which were composed during the pandemic – a period marked by a return to the acoustic guitar and the discovery of new melodies and emotions. Tracks like Resistência, Obrigado Arismar, Choro pra Bailarina, Aquele Tom, Salve Azymuth, and Tamborim reflect both resilience and artistic transformation. Deeply rooted in the rhythms of Brazil – Samba, Maracatú, Frevo, Baião – and equally shaped by his adopted homeland of Switzerland, the album celebrates the two cultures that have defined Dudu Penz both musically and personally.

Brazilian-Swiss bassist, composer, and arranger Eduardo “Dudu” Penz looks back on a career spanning over 40 years — as a sought-after sideman on hundreds of recordings and countless stages around the world. Now, the Porto Alegre–born and long-time Zurich-based musician releases his first album under his own name.
The album Tamborim brings together 13 original compositions, written between 1990 and 2022. Deeply rooted in Brazilian rhythmic traditions and shaped by jazz harmonies and inspired improvisation, the music blends styles such as Maracatú, Baião, Samba, and Frevo with a contemporary jazz aesthetic. Performed by renowned musicians from both Brazil and Switzerland — many of whom have accompanied Dudu Penz throughout his musical journey — this mostly instrumental work tells a wordless story: a life lived between two cultures, and the personal sound of an artist who spent decades in the background and is now stepping into the spotlight.
Rather than forming a fixed ensemble, Dudu Penz invited different musicians into the studio for each composition. This allowed him to tailor each piece to the individual lineup and achieve a stylistically rich and diverse sound. The recordings were made at Hard Studios in Winterthur, in co-production with SRF 2 Kultur.
