The Norwegian duo of Espen Eriksen (piano) and Gunnar Halle (trumpet) play extraordinary atmospheric music deep rooted in the land and the soul – warm hearted inside, cool and fresh outside - everything you would expect from master musicians from the far north.
The duo was formed in 2007 and has previously released two critically acclaimed records on the Norwegian label Grappa, presenting exciting new and improvisational versions of Norwegian hymns and folk tunes. Through the years they have toured in Norway, Denmark, Spain, Russia, England, Scotland, Island and Greece.
On their first record for Unit Records “Sangboka” (“The Songbook”) they present new renditions of traditional songs often referred to as “the Norwegian song treasure”. Until a generation ago these songs were sung by the everyman in all Norwegian homes, in choirs and, not least, in schools.
Through bald new arrangements and tasteful use of effect processing and overdubs, the duo has revitalized the tradition and made it relevant for a new and larger audience far beyond Norway's borders.

“Sangboka” means “the Songbook” in Norwegian. True to the title the Norwegian duo Espen Eriksen (piano) and Gunnar Halle (trumpet) on this album interpret eight songs that until a generation ago were sung by the everyman in all Norwegian homes, in choirs and, not least, in schools.
After 14 years of touring all over Europe with exciting new version of traditional music –
both religious and profane – the duo has become masters of revitalizing old music. On their newest album “Sangboka” a new dimension has been added to their play with tradition. Through effect processing, overdubs and use of live electronics, the duo builds both lush and hypnotic soundscapes.
We belong to the last generation that learnt to sing what is often referred to as the “Norwegian song treasure” in school. With strong and simple melodies, this music has laid deep tracks in us and forms a crucial part of our musical expression. As Norwegian jazz musicians, the Norwegian Songbook has influenced us more than “The Great American Songbook”. With our album «Sangboka» we present the tradition while at the same time taking it forward by presenting it in a way that has never been heard before.
Although these songs were an important part of the building of a Norwegian nationhood in the 1800s and 1900s, Swedish and Danish songs were also included in the songbook repertoire. This song-treasure strengthened the feeling of community, identity and belief in the future and played an important part in the currents of National Romanticism that celebrated life in rural Norway.
Both Eriksen and Halle are established musicians in their own right, touring around the world with other projects like Espen Eriksen Trio and Gunnar Halle Quartet. They have also worked with musicians like Andy Sheppard, Eivind Aarset, Mari Boine, Pierre Dørge, Yusef Lateef and Ray Anderson.
