The instrumentation of this trio, consisting of trumpet, drums and bass represents the quintessence of the music called jazz. The trumpet player from Zurich and the rhythm section from Berlin are in search of the DNA of this music. Compositions by Monk, Ornette, Strayhorn and others are interpreted with creativity, courage. and devotion. Personal expression and passionate research of unknown territories inside the compositions we thought we all knew before: those are the central ingredients of this band. In a raw and uncut fashion they get to the core of the matter.

The line-up of trumpet, bass and drums represents the nucleus of jazz: Melody and rhythm in their purest form. Thanks to the incredibly transparent instrumentation, the protagonists' melodic ideas go straight to the listener's ears and heart. The trio is complemented by US saxophonist Bill McHenry, who sets an emotional climax at the end of the album with a moving interpretation of the classic ballad "The Meaning of the Blues".
The album opens with Charles Mingus' "Reincarnation of a Lovebird", a tribute to Charlie Parker. The following spontaneous improvisation "Walcheturm" is named after the recording location and illustrates the location of the classics from the jazz repertoire in the here and now of spontaneous interaction. This is followed by an original composition by the guest saxophonist, a jewel penned by Thelonious Monk, a contribution by the leader on the trumpet and an astonishing composition by his seven-year-old daughter.
The contrasting repertoire is held together by the strong musical personalities of four congenial storytellers. An extraordinarily organic sound gives the listener the impression of being in the middle of the music or even swimming in the ears of the musicians through a constant stream of musical ideas.

Bill McHenry is best known for his work with Paul Motian. His duo with drummer Andrew Cyrille is also noteworthy, as is the quartet he leads with trumpeter John McNeill. McHenry achieves the feat of completely dispensing with clichéd modes of expression with a form of playing that is thoroughly rooted in tradition. With a never-ending imagination, he is one of the few younger saxophonists in the new millennium to have developed a completely independent musical language.

Spillmann has been engaged by numerous renowned musicians, including artists as diverse as Gianluigi Trovesi, Sophie Hunger, Jojo Mayer, Malcolm Braff and the Noise Trio Steamboat Switzerland. By performing on stage with the likes of Clark Terry, Joe Lovano, Benny Golson, Joe Haider and many others, he has gained first-hand knowledge of the jazz tradition.

Two of the most successful younger German bands, the Melt Trio and Lisbeth Quartet, benefit from these qualities. He is still present in the danish jazz scene through his regular appearances with Mads La Cour or Carl Winther. Andreas combines two rare gifts in his bass playing: an unshakeable physical presence and at the same time the ability to listen to his fellow musicians and adapt immediately to any musical situation.
