Merlin Breij

Merlin Breij is a Dutch-Swiss composer and guitarist based in Lausanne. As an eclectic composer, his works range from large-scale works, such as the 5-movements suite for jazz ensemble "Hommage à Emmanuel Carnevali"; to chamber jazz works such as the suite for 2 clarinets and guitar "Exode"; or the creation of a contemporary piece for cello, guitar and drum named "Piazza Virgiliana" . These compositions underline the fascination that the notions of form exert on the perception of the listener; the fusion of harmonic languages collected in different approaches of writing; while keeping in the foreground the notion of lyrical melody that the composer defends in each aesthetic direction that he includes in his language.

Guitarist specialized in "chamber" jazz formations, Merlin Breij plays willingly in duo, as with the group " Naratès “(piano and guitar), in trio : "Merlin et les Maîtres de l'Air" (2 bass clarinets and guitar), or in various projects to create new music ; however without excluding classical combos, as his work with "Cerulean Poppy" has shown. His skills as a "section" guitarist and as an interpreter of written music have also earned him a place in larger ensembles, such as "Tribute to Maria Schneider" produced by the HEMU in 2019, or the "SYJO", where he recorded with a Big Band featuring Peter Erskin, Christian Jacob, and Tim Ries, among others. These projects have led him to play in places such as Label Suisse, Spirale, Chorus, Théâtre 2.21, the Montreux Jazz Festival and Septembre Musical.

His musical studies took place at the HEMU (Haute École de Musique de Lausanne) and before that at the EJMA - École de Jazz et de Musique Actuelle, with teachers such as Sylvain Luc, Emil Spanyi, Vinz Vonlanthen, William Blank, Jeff Baud and Julien Feltin, obtaining his Bachelor's degree in 2019 with the highest honors at his graduation concert, and his Master's degree in pedagogy in 2021, which was awarded with the J. de Crousaz prize.

Merlin Breij Group is an ensemble wich purpose is the performance of the large-scale compositions from Merlin Breij's catalogue. this band serves both as a composition laboratory and as the leading band of the composer's musical project.

This group is set as a modular band, because it can be restructured according to the needs of the work to be created, this project can be made up of five or ten musicians from different backgrounds, from jazz to classical et contemporary music.

Description

Impulsions is a project born from the desire to merge two musical worlds that form the basis of Merlin Breij’s identity as a composer: jazz and "classical" music. Creating a synthesis of these two worlds of music has been a long-standing theme in Merlin Breij’s work.

The album consists of two pieces :
- "Impulsions", a suite for a composite nonet in four movements and an interlude. It explores a mix of different approaches and instrumentation of jazz and classical music: A jazz quartet (drums, double bass, marimba/vibraphone and guitar) is put in dialogue with a string quartet and a harp. Classical forms (sonata form, theme and variations...) are restructured to include improvisation and the unpredictability which jazz offers.
- “Ombrages", a piece for solo electric guitar, pursues a singular way of presenting this instrument in solo, in a formal organization quite different from the usual ones offered in jazz and contemporary music.

This music is performed by the "Merlin Breij Group". This modular ensemble has created a piece with similar objectives in 2019: "Homage to Emanuel Carnevali". "Impulsion" was recorded in December 2021 at the Artefax studio in Lausanne with the following musicians:

Violin 1 :          Nina Ramousse-Fuchs
Violin 2:           Marie Sophie Baumgartner
Viola :              Madalin Noël
Cello:               Sarah Fouchenneret
Harp:               Alice Emery
Guitar:             Merlin Breij
Marimba, Vibraphone, Tam-Tam: Lenni Torgue
Double bass:   Yves Marcotte
Drums:            Fabien Ghirotto

The album’s title "Impulsion" was not chosen by chance. The title evokes the awakening of an inner rumbling, crushing an existing conviction, in the hope of giving birth to a new ideal. Musically, this translates in an intense fury resulting from polytonal harmonizations and oppressive rhythms, put in confrontation by passages of a great softness and warmth in sound texture.
