Description

Drummer and composer Nikolaus Dolp, who has been a defining force behind the grooves of Austrian Jazz-phenomenon Shake Stew for over a decade, releases Dread, Delight and Yowzah — his first album under his own name. The distinctive, high-energy statement gains international impact through the participation of Jazz legend Billy Cobham, producer Pablo Herrasti-Fajardo, and further outstanding guest artists.

Together with his quartet (Richard Koch, Stephanie Weninger, Raphael Preuschl) and around 20 musicians in total, Dolp creates a multi-layered work between jazz, funk, 70s fusion, and orchestral soundscapes. At its core lie three emotional poles: Dread, Delight, and Yowzah.

Moving between melancholy and electrified alertness, the album feels like a soundtrack for a world in transition. For Dolp, it marks his most ambitious statement to date as drummer, composer, and producer, pushing beyond the boundaries of jazz into his personal cinematic sonic vision. Billy Cobham was equally impressed: “I am fascinated by your ideas and the timing for me to participate in this collaboration couldn’t be better …”

In Concert, the band Dread, Delight and Yowzah brings together four distinctive voices from the European jazz and improvisation scene:

Richard Koch (Seeed, Nils Frahm, Hermeto Pascoal, Peter Fox) — trumpet
Raphael Preuschl (David Helbock, Jazzwerkstatt Wien) — electric bass
Stephanie Weninger (Sweetlife Quartett, Ciara Moser) — keyboards
Nikolaus Dolp (Shake Stew, Memplex) — drums

Dread, Delight and Yowzah is not conceived as a conclusion, but as the starting point of an ongoing artistic vision. Work on the next album has already begun. So! let go, all the way — Yowzah!
Drummer and composer Nikolaus Dolp, who has been the driving force behind the legendary grooves of Shake Stew for more than a decade, ignites an explosive and unmistakably original sonic journey with Dread, Delight and Yowzah — his first release under his own name. The project gains international resonance through the participation of jazz legend Billy Cobham, producer Pablo Herrasti-Fajardo, and a range of outstanding guest artists.

Together with his quartet — Richard Koch (trumpet), Stephanie Weninger (piano, keys), and Raphael Preuschl (bass) — and nearly 20 musicians involved overall, Dolp creates a richly eclectic album situated somewhere between jazz, funk, 70s fusion, and cinematic orchestral soundscapes. The music moves through three emotional poles:
Dread — the fear of what lies ahead,
Delight — the joy of the present moment,
Yowzah — the awe sparked by the unexpected.

The album constantly shifts between destruction and beauty, melancholy and electrified alertness — a soundtrack for a world at a tipping point, reflecting the emotional tensions of our contemporary reality.

For Nikolaus Dolp, Dread, Delight and Yowzah marks his most ambitious artistic statement to date — as drummer, composer, and producer alike. Expanding far beyond the boundaries of contemporary jazz, the album unfolds as a powerful, cinematic, and deeply personal sonic vision. Its uncompromising energy also drew in jazz icon Billy Cobham, who commented on the collaboration: “I am fascinated by your ideas and the timing for me to participate in this collaboration couldn’t be better …”

Dread, Delight and Yowzah is not conceived as a conclusion, but as the starting point of an ongoing artistic vision. Work on the next album has already begun. So, let go, all the way — Yowzah!

Auch Billy Cobham zeigte sich beeindruckt: „I am fascinated by your ideas and the timing for me to participate in this collaboration couldn’t be better …“

Live vereint die Band Dread, Delight and Yowzah vier markante Stimmen der Mitteleuropäischen Jazz- und Improvisationsszene:

Richard Koch (Seeed, Nils Frahm, Hermeto Pascoal, Peter Fox )- Trompete
Raphael Preuschl (David Helbock, Jazzwerkstatt Wien) - Elektrischer Bass
Stephanie Weninger (Sweetlife Quartett, Ciara Moser) - Keyboards
Nikolaus Dolp (Shake Stew, Memplex) - Drums

Let go, all the way – Yowzah!

Mit seiner kompromisslosen Energie zog das Projekt auch Jazzikone Billy Cobham an, der über die Zusammenarbeit sagte: „I am fascinated by your ideas and the timing for me to participate in this collaboration couldn’t be better …“

Let go, all the way! - Yowzah!

Billy Cobham s’est également montré impressionné : « I am fascinated by your ideas and the timing for me to participate in this collaboration couldn’t be better … »

Richard Koch (Seeed, Nils Frahm, Hermeto Pascoal, Peter Fox) — trompette
Raphael Preuschl (David Helbock, Jazzwerkstatt Wien) — basse électrique
Stephanie Weninger (Sweetlife Quartett, Ciara Moser) — claviers
Nikolaus Dolp (Shake Stew) — batterie

I am fascinated by your ideas and the timing for me to participate in this collaboration couldn’t be better … »
