Double bass player Patrick Kessler has been carrying around the idea of recording an album that inspires you to play along instead of just listening to for quite some time. In drummer Julian Sartorius he found and ally, and the record you are holding in your hands is the result.
The concept is not entirely new: from 1967, US jazz educator Jamey Aebersold published a series of instruction booklets with recordings that musicians could practise to at home.
With their double album "Playalong Vol. 1", Kessler/Sartorius take this idea a few steps further. In their 11 improvised pieces, there is no center, only a left and a right. This can be experienced spatially via headphones: Kessler plucks, strokes and scrapes his bass in your left ear, while Sartorius makes his drums sound, sing and vibrate in your right ear. And in between? There's room for you and your imagination!

Das Konzept ist nicht ganz neu: Der US-Jazz-Pädagoge Jamey Aebersold veröffentlichte ab 1967 eine Serie von Lehrheften mit Tonträgern, zu denen Musiker*innen zu Hause üben konnten. Mit ihrem Doppelalbum „Playalong Vol. 1“ spinnen Kessler/Sartorius diese Idee weiter. In ihren 11 frei improvisierten Stücken gibt es keine Mitte, nur ein Rechts und ein Links. Räumlich erfahrbar wird das unter dem Kopfhörer: In Ihrem linken Ohr zupft, streicht, schabt Kessler seinen Bass, in Ihrem rechten bringt Sartorius sein Schlagzeug zum Klingen, Singen, Schwingen. Und dazwischen? Ist Platz für Sie und Ihre Vorstellungskraft!
